STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths)
At Newport Lakes Primary School, each classroom has its own STEM kit, which includes a variety of materials and equipment for students to use during partner or small group challenges. STEM activities are designed to be open ended with the children coming up with a solution to a particular challenge that has been set using the materials in box in whatever manner they desire. Discussion and co-operation are encouraged. Creativity is an important aspect as the children create, test, modify and retest their particular task. Sharing what each group or team has made allows others to build on their understanding of how things work and adds to their bank of knowledge for future sessions. Materials in the kits include paper plates, wire, plasticine, paper straws, pins, cardboard, ribbon, toothpicks and much more.
Also available for the children are different robotics which can include coding programs, programmable drones, Lego Technics and electric circuit systems.
The school has also been fortunate to receive grant money, which has allowed us to purchase numerous Science kits that are used in conjunction with out BQT sessions across the school.
The school runs 3 lunchtime science clubs for those students interested in extending their understanding on particular topics or activities.
